Joshua Spooner landowner of Hallam Gate, commissioned a local stone mason Joseph Wridle snr (Ridal/Rydal) to build 'The Old Grindstone' Inn c1828. George and Sarah Stead were landlords there with their family, till c1852 when after an argument, with one of their sons and the then Inn owner Peter Spooner, they were evicted.

Such was their anger, the Stead family built their own Pub at 22-24 Crookes, corner of Coombe Road opposite Bute Street. In Sept 1853 Sarah applied for a licence for their Pub, calling it in direct competition 'The Old Original Grindstone', although it certainly was not. The 'Old Original Grindstone' was demolished in 1963 as part of Council road widening.
